Perhaps the most well-known series to adorn the word “Samurai” in its title would have to be the Samurai Showdown games from SNK. There are now half a dozen mainline Samurai Showdown games, not to mention countless spinoffs and cross-overs – we’re looking at you, SNK vs. Capcom

What made this series so unique for its time was that it was a fighting game in which the characters used weapons to attack. Indeed, the original Samurai Showdown pre-dates other famous weapon-based fighting games like Soul Calibre and was quite a revelation when it dropped in the middle of the genre’s golden age during the early nineties. While Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat focused on hand-to-hand combat with magical abilities thrown into the mix, Samurai Showdown gave its characters actual weapons to dish out the violence.

Rather than focusing on elaborate combos and special moves, this series is more interested in dealing with quick, sharp blows that gradually eat away at your opponent’s health. It’s simultaneously more thoughtful and more frenetic than most fighting games, as you really need to pick your moments to go in for the kill.

And, of course, the other main thing that really makes this game stand out is its Japanese feudal setting. While today, we have games like Ghost of Tsushima that gorgeously reimagine this storied era from Japan’s history, back in the nineties, western gamers did not have as many options. The music, graphics, character design, and presentation all ooze a feudal Japan/anime charm that still looks great all of these years later. While any of the first 5 Samurai Showdown games are an excellent time, most fans agree that the series peaked in its second installment.

First Samurai is a beat ‘em up game originally released for the Amiga and later ported to the Super Nintendo. As the name suggests, your play as the first ever Samurai in the history of feudal Japan as you undergo a quest staking your claim as the greatest swordsman in all the land. The gameplay is fairly standard for an action platforming game but is still a load of fun, nonetheless. As the Samurai, you work your way through forests, towns, and dungeons, taking out rival swordsmen and drinking lots and lots of sake. A sequel, appropriately titled Second Samurai, was released for the Mega Drive a couple of years later and featured levels set in prehistoric and futuristic times.

Hopefully, we have established just how cool it is to play as a Samurai in a video game. We don’t think anyone could have a boring time embodying one of history’s greatest orders of warriors and using a Samurai sword to slice down foes. Best of all, you can play all of these classic Samurai games for free on your browser on MyEmulator.Online.
