Samurai Shodown (NEO GEO)
Samurai Shodown (AKA Samurai Spirits, サムライスピリッツ in Japan) is a 2D samurai 1vs1 fighting video game developed and published by SNK for the NEO-GEO console in 1993. The game is set in the 18th century, and what sets it apart from other fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 is that this game has weapon-based characters. This makes it one of the most popular games of SNK.
The game has 12 different characters. Since it is a weapon-based game, all characters boast of a unique weapon. Having a weapon in the game really changed the cliché fighting game set-up. One of the cons of this game is that some characters have a lot more moves than others. The character’s moves consist of slashing the sword, and kicking opponents.
Samurai Shodown is not just about attacking your opponent; it is more about defense, which is not really usual for a fighting game. Another thing that sets this game apart is the presence of a referee during fight, Kuroko. Most fighting games don’t have referees.
Considering the year it was released, the graphics are amazing. The stage or background is very lively and has great animation. The visuals are very colorful and bright, which make the scenes in Samurai Shodown incredibly good. One of the best things in this game is that the camera gameplay zooms in when the two characters get close, and zoom out when they are away from each other. This effect adds more intensity to the game.
Samurai Shodown did well when it comes to music and sound effects. The background music during the fight matches perfectly complements the stage, and it sets the mood during the fight. On the other hand, the sound effects during a fight consist of the slashing sound of the sword, and the spurt of the blood from your opponent that adds more intensity to the game.

It made the game way different from other fighting games like Street Fighter 2 Turbo, and Mortal Kombat. The graphics and sounds are incredibly good, considering that it was released back in 1993. The graphics and sound effects make the game more captivating. Again, this game is highly recommended, and a must try.
