Samurai Shodown 2 (NEO GEO)
A year after the colossal launch of Samurai Shodown I, SNK, the developer and publisher of the most popular arcade game series like Metal Slug and the Last Blade, decided to release Samurai Shodown 2 (AKA 真サムライスピリッツ 覇王丸地獄変 Shin Samurai Supirittsu Haōmaru Jigokuhen in Japan) for the Neo Geo system. This game is far more superior to its predecessor in many ways.
Samurai Shodown II is a weapon-based fighting game. Although it has no fancy super attacks or innovative combo system, the controls are smooth and responsive. Most 2D fighting games of the early 90’s have unresponsive and sluggish controls. This is the reason why most gamers do not fancy 2D weapon-based fighting games. This game redefined the presumptions to its genre.
In terms of the game’s graphics, you can’t expect much to a video game that was released in 1994. Pixelations to the backgrounds and characters are evident. Despite this, the characters and backdrops are well drawn. The sceneries give off spiritual vibes and clearly portray the timeline of the story, which is the Sakkoku or the seclusion period of Japan. The Kabukis, Ninjas, and Japanese dialogues also add to the culture being portrayed in the game.
There are 6 new characters in this sequel. They are Genjurou Kibagami, Haohmaru’s ultimate rival, Neinhalt Sieger, a valiant and noble knight from Prussia, Nicotine Caffeine, an old monk, Kuroku, the background referee, Cham Cham, a young cat-like girl, and Mizuki Rashojin, a vengeful spirit.

The old characters were altered a bit. The game was rebalanced, nerfing and upgrading some characters. For example, Earthquake has more moves and Haohmaru is weaker in this game than in Samurai Shodown I.
Except for Amakusa and Tam Tam, the other characters of part 1 return in this sequel. The 6 new characters fit well with the previous cast in style and design. Cham Cham replaced Tam Tam, and Amakusa was removed from the game. There’s also a new final boss, Mizuki, and Kuroko can be used.
Overall, the game has everything that a sequel should have. It has new characters, and it has better graphics, more moves, and better sound effects than Samurai Shodown I. Its predecessor has been a well-developed fighting game already. But Samurai Shodown 2 incorporates additional characters and effects to the gameplay, which upgrades the fighting experience.
Samurai Shodown 2 game has been ported to Arcade, Neo Geo (this version), Neo-Geo CD, Neo Geo Pocket Color, PlayStation, Windows, Neo Geo X, iOS, Android, Wii
