Mega Man X2 (AKA Rockman X2 or ロックマンX2 in Japan) is a 2D action platform video game developed by Capcom for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and released in 1994 and 1995. The game was followed by Mega Man X3 (1995).

Mega Man X2 received mostly positive reception when it was first released in 1994. Its plot is quite interesting though only a direct sequel to Mega Man X. In X2, we still follow the adventures of the android protagonist “X”, a “Maverick Hunter” who saved humanity from the evil Sigma a few months prior, as he now tries to take down more “Mavericks” (bad Reploids or robots).

In this development, however, three new antagonists come into play – Mavericks who call themselves “X-Hunters”. They plan to destroy X by luring him with body parts of his fallen colleague, Zero, who died during their battle with Sigma…

In terms of gameplay, Mega Man X2 did not deviate much from its predecessors Mega Man X and the original Mega Man series. It is also an action-platform game wherein the player, assuming the title role X, has to clear several side-scrolling stages (eight in this game).

X’s abilities include running, jumping, climbing walls, dashing on grounds, and firing his arm-cannon “X-Buster”. He must defeat numerous robotic enemies and surpass some platform hazards like deadly spikes and bottomless pits.

As with most games, there are also chances for power-ups and extra lives, and each stage has one main boss at the end. In Mega Man X2, though, each stage has an optional entrance for a battle with one of the X-Hunters, whoever is present in that stage.

With regard to graphics, Mega Man X2 has some kind of a 3D effect as a result of Capcom using an enhancement chip to allow for this. The game’s music and sound effects are good, too, albeit not that standout. Controls are rather smooth and it is fairly easy to move X around.

Overall, Mega Man X2 is fun to play with nicer visuals, a darker storyline with quite a twist, and some new skills (ex. dash) and new weapons (ex. hover bikes) for the main character. Yes, it does not differ that much from the original, but it is challenging in its own way and enjoyable nevertheless.

Mega Man X2 game has been ported to SNES (this version), mobile phones and Nintendo Virtual Console.
