Mega Man ZX (NDS)
Mega Man ZX (AKA Rockman ZX, ロックマンゼクス in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling platform run & gun video game developed by Inti Creates and published by Capcom for the Nintendo DS console in 2006.
After some successful Mega Man games, Capcom published this one on the Nintendo DS. Mega Man ZX is the first of the franchise made for the NDS. It’s also the first Mega Man game with a male and a female lead character. It was even followed in a sequel (Mega Man ZX Advent) in 2007.
When ZX was released in 2006, more than 33,000 games were sold in just a week in Japan.
You get to choose between two human characters. Vent and Aile’s powers and abilities are the same. They only have different stories.
The gameplay is similar to Mega Man Zero’s, but the developers changed ZX’s setting to an open world type. There are several mandatory and optional missions you can choose from.
Missions can be aborted and you can claim new ones any time. This gives gamers the choice as to how they want to play the game. However, the maps are quite complicated to understand.
The maps are made to be similar to Metroidvania games. But instead of a clear drawn out map, you’ll see a web of different zones with labels like A-2, H-1, and K-1. The letters and numbers don’t have any logical connection with each other, so you can be at zone E-7 and the zone next to it will be A-5.
Besides the complicated map, every element in terms of graphics is beautiful. The sprites are well-animated and the parallax scrolling backgrounds are effective.
There are anime-style cut scenes which are fully animated. However, some levels may seem repetitive in the effort to make the content consistent. Still, ZX stuck to every Mega Man game’s signature bright and colorful graphics.
Every cut scene is fully voiced in Japanese, but there are available English subtitles. The music and sound effects are perfect for an arcade-style game like Mega Man ZX, but it’s not as impressive as the classic Mega Man games.
There’s an added sound effect when the character jumps that seem to be annoying for some gamers.
Mega Man ZX has a good storyline and a well-executed mission-based open world gameplay. The only downside to the ZX is its complicated map.
Mega Man ZX game has only been ported to the Nintendo DS.
