Sunsoft had already established its superhero gaming credits with the excellent Batman game on NES by the time they release Superman for the Sega Genesis in 1992. This game takes the form of a traditional side-scrolling action game merging together platforming and combat, all with a distinctly Superman aesthetic layered over everything. Superman’s moveset may be limited to punching and jumping, but that doesn’t take away from the inherent fun of taking down some of comic book’s most infamous villains, all the while listening to a banging Genesis soundtrack in the background.
Two years later, Sunsoft would return to Metropolis with The Death and Return of Superman also for the Sega Genesis. Based on the famous comic storyline of the same name, The Death and Return of Superman adopts a beat ‘em up gameplay style in line with the classic arcade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. Players can choose from a variety of Supermans (Supermen?) to play as on their quest, each with their own unique powers and melee attacks. Surprisingly, there is no multiplayer mode to this game, but don’t let that deter you from what is still an incredibly enjoyable single-player experience.
Superman Returns: Fortress of Solitude is a movie tie-in game of the 2006 blockbuster that came out for the Gameboy Advance. Interestingly, the gameplay here is largely centred around sudoku-style puzzles that gamers need to complete in order to advance the story. There some more action-packed sections of the game, but as a whole, Superman Returns: Fortress of Solitude is a refreshingly chilled out superhero game that reminds us that not all comic book adaptations need to rely on explosions and a break-neck pace.
Superman: Countdown to Apokolips is an isometric platform-action game that was released for the Gameboy Advance in 2003. Unlike some of the other games that we have mentioned, Countdown to Apokolips allows Superman to access far more of his iconic powers, including flight, heat vision and iceblasts. These powers add a lot of variety to the combat and traversal, ensuring you feel like the Man of Steel while playing. The story is also pretty engaging, involving the agents of Darkseid arriving on Earth and kidnapping Lois Lane.
And before we finish up, while Superman for the Nintendo 64 may be infamous across the industry for its subpar gameplay, abundance of glitches, and confusing presentation, there is a certain amount of unironic joy that can be had when playing a game that so clearly misses the mark in what it set out to do. It may not be good, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a lot of fun to try out just to see how disastrous bad game design can be.
