It’s hard to overstate just how fantastic Rare used to be. Rather than stick to one or two characters or series that they had a knack for, the studio once vied for the top of the industry across several genres – Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark defined FPS local multiplayer, Diddy Kong Racing is a methodical kart racer with single-player in mind, and Banjo-Kazooie could teach Super Mario 64 a thing or two, if you ask me. That’s not to mention other great titles like Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, which, for my money, is still the best 2D platformer ever made. Rare’s retro catalog boasts an expansive, varied, and overwhelming number of classics.

Let’s do a deeper dive into some of those games, just to be sure we do them justice. Banjo-Kazooie is one of the best collectathons ever made, with a long gauntlet of colorful worlds jam-packed with secrets and tunes that are impossible to get out of your head. The collectathon formula is dialed up to eleven in Donkey Kong 64, which adds bigger worlds, five different characters, and so much more to collect. Conker’s Bad Fur Day, meanwhile, is a different 3D adventure – it’s abnormally crude, but incredibly fun.
I can’t say enough about the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, either. Beautiful, distinctively retro 16-bit graphics, plenty of lovely musical pieces, and, most importantly, loads and loads of challenging gameplay across tightly-designed levels and worlds make this set of games one of the best of the SNES and of their genre.
That’s barely scratching the surface of what Rare has to offer. Diddy Kong Racing, with its methodical style of play, is rightly remembered as one of the greatest kart racers ever made. Goldeneye 007 redefined local multiplayer for the FPS genre while Perfect Dark worked to expand and refine that winning formula. Plenty of lesser-known gems like Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini, and the Donkey Kong Land series document Rare’s absurd range of talent. Seriously, if you haven’t tried some of these titles, you’re almost certainly missing out. Even if you have tried them, they’re just about all worth another visit, so don’t wait!
