Basketball is a ton of fun, especially on the world’s greatest stage, the NBA. It’s even more fun when the greatest of the great take to the court and make it their own through stylish, dominant play. Enter NBA Jam, a retro classic that takes some of its era’s most beloved stars in a groovy basketball game where style and intensity are cranked up to 11. With zany hidden characters and cheats, realistic 16-bit recreations of 1990s basketball stars, and fast-paced, competitive gameplay, NBA Jam cemented itself as a classic almost immediately upon release. Taking the world by storm, NBA Jam was at one point reported as the most profitable arcade title of all time. Going all-in on a unique, memorable, and ceaselessly engaging experience, NBA Jam brings the house down with a catchy, upbeat soundtrack, and emphatic, exciting announcer, and an exciting cast of NBA superstars. Gameplay is king, though, and NBA Jam delivers 100% of the time.
NBA Jam is all about absurdly athletic accomplishments and breaking physical boundaries. As a 2-on-2 game rather than 5-on-5, the title is extremely offense-friendly. You have a wide-open court to navigate and plenty of open lanes to attack over and over. As such, NBA Jam is consistently fast-paced and high-scoring. Sounds fun, right?
Open courts are hardly the start of things when it comes to NBA Jam, though. Impossibly high jumps, earth-shattering dunks, and other physical extremes make the game a constantly exciting experience. The highlight comes when one player makes three baskets in a row – then, they’ll be “on fire.” This status, which enables a temporarily unlimited turbo boost and an increased shooting percentage, allows players to really crank up the heat and pull off a long list of eye-dazzling special moves. It’ll last until that player sinks four shots or until the other team makes a basket, so lighting up on fire is a great opportunity to build up a sizable lead against the other team.
Like plenty of games of its era, NBA Jam is loaded with cheats that expand the game with new characters, stats, and more. You can even play as then-President Bill Clinton and then-Vice President Al Gore – as I said, realism is out the window with NBA Jam. The game knows how to have fun, and won’t let any silly attachments to reality or the laws of physics get in its way.
The main drawback to NBA Jam is that, for a game about physical insanity and big personalities, it’s missing a few very notable players from its era. Licensing issues kept Michael Jordan out of the mix, and Charles Barkley missed out while promoting his own basketball game. Beyond that, NBA Jam is an excellent time, and with so much going on and such a large cast beyond those missing stars, you will probably not miss their absence too much.
Ultimately, NBA Jam is a fantastic time today just as it was back then. Doing the impossible with that era’s stars never gets old. The arcade classic took the world by storm and holds up quite well today on the SNES, so don’t waste any time – whether you’ve tried it before or not, hop into a match and see how long it takes for you to light up the court.
