The Legend of Zelda (NES)

Legendary games usually just come out of nowhere. This is exactly what happened with the original The Legend of Zelda (AKA ザハイラルファンタジー ゼルダの伝説 Za Hairaru Fantajī: Zeruda no Densetsu) game, which was released for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) in 1986.

At first, Nintendo was not even sure if was going to succeed, and yet it still went on to become one of the best-selling, one of the most influential, and one of the greatest games ever created. It was followed by The Adventure of Link and A Link to the Past (SNES).

May the Triforce be with you in this adventure!

The Legend of Zelda is an action-adventure role-playing game that was created by Nintendo to be a “symbol of courage, strength, and wisdom.” While it is technically not classified as a true RPG, it has a lot of elements that were adapted by RPG games both then and now. Its flip-screen overhead perspective became the platform of choice for early RPG games.

Its musical style became the favorite for RPG developers, and its large fantasy maps with complex storylines became the gold standard for RPGs to follow. The Legend of Zelda was also the first game ever to have an auto-save feature.

The gameplay of The Legend of Zelda was challenging yet intuitive. Along the way, you’ll be passing through multiple dungeons and passages, facing a multitude of enemies in the process. As you go further, you get access to weapons and items, culminating with the acquisition of the Triforce of Wisdom.

You can complete the game using different approaches, which adds a crucial wrinkle to the game. Also, you’ll get access to the “Second Quest,” a more difficult version of the game that features a completely different game layout, once you’ve completed the game.

The Legend of Zelda is considered as a legendary video game because it blazed the trail for future games to follow. From the technical to the strategic elements, this game brought a lot of innovations in the gaming scene. Zelda, with its complex storyline, multiple ways to attack the game, and special features, is still a joy to play up to this day.

The Legend of Zelda game has been ported to NES (this version), Game Boy Advance, Nintendo Virtual Console (N3DS) and many other gaming systems.
