Wild Guns (SNES)
Wild Guns (AKA ワイルドアームズ Wairudo Āmuzu in Japan) is a space western shoot ’em up video game developed and published by Natsume for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994. The game is set in the American Wild West with influences of sci-fi and steampunk, and follows the story of a character seeking vengeance for what happened to their family. Wild Guns is, in our opinion, one of the best SNES games ever!
Players in Wild Guns can choose to play as either Annie, Clint, or both for the two player cooperative mode. The characters move in the foreground while shooting enemies in the background. Characters cannot move and shoot at the same time. Players can dodge gunfire by making their characters dive, roll, and jump. Weapons can be upgraded as the player progresses in the game and finds various item boxes.
Every stage of Wild Guns is divided into two parts with a mini-boss at the end of each part. To move to the next part, the player must stay alive until the timer goes down to zero. Shooting and outlasting opponents are the key to completing the different stages.
The graphics of each stage are beautifully detailed and animated, which is impressive for a game in the SNES platform. Enemy characters and the visuals of the stage perfectly match and you can really see that the game designers have done their job. Players can shoot any object on the screen and get an animated reaction when hitting said object.
Wild Guns’ soundtrack is nothing special. It fits the game but it just doesn’t stand-out. For the sound effects, it is what you would expect from an arcade shooting game. But, do not take this sound quality as something bad. The arcade and shooting gaming genre perfectly works with the sound and music it offers.
Natsume’s Wild Guns can be considered as one of the best shoot ’em up games in the SNES. The intensity of the game and the animated graphics make it an enjoyable experience in both single and two player modes. Even in its easiest mode, gameplay is rewarding and challenging.
Wild Guns has been ported to SNES, Nintendo Virtual Console (Wii, Wii U), Sony PlayStation 4.
