Dragon Warrior 3 (NES)
Dragon Warrior 3 (AKA Dragon Quest 3, Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation, Dragon Quest III: Soshite Densetsu or ドラゴンクエストIII そして伝説へ… in Japan) is a 2D adventure RPG video game developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix for the NES 8-bit console in 1988. It is the third installment of the Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in the rest of the world) series which follows the story of a young hero on a quest to save the world from the archfiend Baramos. Accompanied by three more characters, the hero embarks on an adventure to find his way to the evil Baramos’s den.
In the modern gaming era, it is challenging to find absolute gems to add to your library of retro games. Some titles are best forgotten, while some are classics not to miss. Under which category is Dragon Warrior 3 for NES?
As a role-playing game (RPG), the gameplay is typically the same with other RPGs. Quests are completed, members are added to your party, experience points are obtained, items and money are collected, and as a team, you fight evil forces on your way to defeating the big bad boss. Similar to other RPGs, Dragon Warrior 3 features a menu that allows you to equip yourself weapons, use items, etc. The combat is also a turn-based strategy, as with other RPGs. Nevertheless, the game stands out among the rest by a few new features.

At the beginning of the game, a force that “represents all” asks you a few questions to determine who you are as the main character. Your answers identify your assigned persona and rank in the game. This is an insightful and interesting way to customize your characters. The other members of your party can be chosen from one of the seven classes: Warrior, Cleric, Dealer, Fighter, Mage, Jester, and Thief.
Every class is unique and contributes to the party by either increasing magical stats or improving fighting skills. Other features that set this title from the rest is the addition of new items and “monster medals” which can be traded from one player to another via the link cable.
The graphics of the game are relatively subpar compared to its 8-bit counterparts. The music themes suit each stage well, giving you a good feel of the moment. Overall, Dragon Warrior 3 may not be the best game for everyone, but it is surely a must-have in your retro game collection.
Dragon Warrior 3 game has been ported to Nintendo Entertainment System (this version), SNES, Game Boy Color, Smartphones, Nintendo Virtual Console.
