Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis – Mega Drive)
Streets of Rage 2 (AKA Bare Knuckle II: Shito él no Chinkonka or ベア · ナックル II死闘 へ の 鎮魂歌 in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling beat ’em up video game published by Sega in 1992 for the Genesis console It is the second game in the Streets of Rage series, a sequel to Streets of Rage and followed by Streets of Rage 3.
When the first SOR was released in 1992, it proved to be the match for Nintendo’s beat ’em up hit, Final Fight. To follow up on its success, Sega released Streets of Rage 2 on Genesis and carried the saga out of the shadow of its Super Nintendo counterpart. This sequel boasted of a more refined gameplay and better graphics.
Gameplay is where Streets of Rage 2 shines. There are now four characters that can be played. Axel and Blaze are now joined by Skate and Max. As with the previous release, each character has his own strengths and weaknesses, making each one unique. Using a character requires strategy to make use of the hero’s advantages. The game retains the two player mode, something which Nintendo’s Final Fight 2 copied from the original Streets of Rage.
Like in the first Streets of Rage, the controls on this game are responsive and crisp. Button press to action is precise, appropriate, and satisfying making this game fun to play.
Graphics is another area on which Streets of Rage 2 has greatly improved over the original. Arguably, this was the most gorgeous beat ’em up console game during that time. The character sprites are big from the main characters, to the thugs, to the huge bosses and all were very beautifully detailed. The backgrounds are awesome and add to the overall eye candy.
The sound department is another strong point. Each level has a different theme that matches the atmosphere. Sound effects are crisp and to the point. Streets of Rage 2 had the honor of getting renowned gaming music composer, Yuzo Koshiro.
This game is one of those games that have been released more than two decades ago but will still look gorgeous compared to today’s games. It was a great improvement over the original and a good collector’s item.
Streets of Rage 2 game has been ported to Sega Genesis (this version), Game Gear, Master System, MegaPlay, Virtual Console, iOS, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade.
