R-Type III: The Third Lightning (SNES)
R-Type III: The Third Lightning (AKA アールタイプ3 ザ・サード・ライトニング Āru Taipu Surī: Za Sādo Raitoningu in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling space shoot ’em up video game developed by Irem and published by Irem / Jaleco for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993. It is a sequel to Super R-Type.
Despite its popularity, it is far from perfect. R-Type III: The Third Lightning has certain flaws that will show up unexpectedly, but the game still managed to stand out in many things.
The graphics of this game are more compelling. It has the combination of vibrant colors, flicker-free sprites, and sharp “alien” and mechanical renderings, giving you that stylish and crisp visual experience. You will surely appreciate the mode 7 effects like the spinning scaffolding and rotating barrel-like structure within the 1st level.
You can finish feats that appeared impossible at first with a perfect measure of plotting, patience, persistent tenacity, and resilience. The gameplay for this video game limits your frustration and lets you win after a remorseless and relentless challenge.
The sound effects are solid, but the music stays memorable and noteworthy. The intense soundtracks for the 4th and the 5th level will amaze you. The quality of the soundtracks and sound effects is above average. The shooting sounds are also great.
The controls for R-Type III: The Third Lightning let you play and win with ease. The game features a pattern shooter, so you must be more careful when shooting an enemy. Make sure you use the perfect weapon for every situation and find out the enemy’s weaknesses to increase your chances of winning.
R-Type III: The Third Lightning is truly a beautiful game for the Super NES. It has a wonderful, vibrant color palette and great attention to detail that you can notice on the graphics. Aside from that, the aliens look amazing just like how they were in the previous versions of this game. The game will never be this good without the aliens and those cool sounds played in each level. Though the game is more susceptible to sprite flicker and go-slow, still it can satisfy you most of the time. Indeed, this game is worth considering.
R-Type III: The Third Lightning game has been ported to SNES, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo Virtual Console.
