To me, my X-Men!

X-Men Games

Retro video game enthusiasts know that X-Men was a powerful and fun brand long before the 2000s feature films helped set the stage for the incredibly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just as we have Wolverine and Cyclops to thank for helping to pave the way for Iron Man, many of us can thank the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis for some of the greatest 2D platformers of all time — including multiple X-Men adventures. At MyEmulator, our commitment to preserving these memories even extends beyond those bygone days and into an era of handheld delights. Professor Xavier himself never could have envisioned so many outstanding game adaptations, and there\'s no better place than here to play them for free right from your browser.

Coming up first is Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge. If you can’t get enough of Logan and his team, you likely have a soft spot for Peter Parker as well. What happens when the X-Men are taken captive by the nefarious Arcade? That’s right, it’s Spider-Man to the rescue! Arcade’s Revenge is notorious for its brutal difficulty befitting the brand. Imagine a tough platformer in which Spider-Man uncovers an evil plot, but the X-Men themselves must endure a gauntlet of individual stages in order to break free… and they all share the same pool of lives, so if you perform poorly as Storm, for example, it might be Gambit who suffers.

Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge features two robust levels for each of the X-Men. The first batch is hard enough, but unlocking the second batch means putting yourself through the ringer. Each character will need to rely upon their special abilities to escape the maze. It’s only after Wolverine, Cyclops, Gambit, and Storm have defeated their adversaries that Spider-Man can enter one final stage and destroy Arcade once and for all.

MyEmulator hosts both the SNES and Sega Genesis versions of this cult classic, and while the layout and graphics are more or less identical, audio-savvy fans will no doubt notice some differences in the soundtrack. Check them both out and see which one you prefer!

If Arcade’s Revenge is a solid way to spend a Saturday, then X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse is a spectacular several weeks. It’s not that Mutant Apocalypse is dozens of hours long, but its gameplay depth and variety of approaches to victory made it stand out as a veritable masterpiece back in 1994. It still demands a degree of attention today, as its creative fingerprints can be found in so many X-Men games since.

Mutant Apocalypse stars Wolverine, Cyclops, Psylocke, Gambit, and the Beast. Each character has their own stage; after you’ve completed their initial quest, a password system unlocks allowing you to restart from that point forward. But the mission is far from over! The following three stages can be played in any order, with any character of your choosing. After that, it’s on to a pair of knuckle-blistering boss fights in the Danger Room, and then a final stage featuring the main man Magneto himself.

X-Men 2: Clone Wars is the sequel to a Genesis-only X-Men game that sought to steal the spotlight from Mutant Apocalypse the previous year. Clone Wars is noteworthy for its impressive roster of playable superheroes: Wolverine, Cyclops, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Psylocke, Beast… and even Magneto! Unlocking Magneto after the third level is a real rush, so be sure to stick around until that happens for free, straight through your browser here at MyEmulator.

No list of X-Men classics would be complete without a couple of portable entries, and Activision’s Game Boy Advance chapter, X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse is no slouch. When the team discovers that they’re in an alternate universe ruled by villainous Apocalypse, it’s an uphill battle for survival against his Sentinels and dark-side Mutants.

And if you’re in the market for something rare, strongly consider Activision’s Nintendo DS adaptation of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. All digital storefront editions of this underrated movie tie-in title were erased in 2014 after the company lost their rights to the franchise, making MyEmulator one of the only places on the net that will let you try it out for yourself!
