A genre classic is Excitebike, one of the Nintendo NES launch titles, this game had some technical innovations, such as the smooth scrolling that paved the way for later beloved games, including Super Mario Bros. The sequel, Excitebike 64 is also available, where players can try out the 20-track season mode or test their skills in the Time Trial. A prominent feature in both games is the Track Editor, which allows players to create their own challenging race tracks with jumps and obstacles.

Super Hang-On lets players find out what the career of a motorbike racer is like, with the Original Mode including the need to recruit sponsors and earn money in races in order to buy new components for your bike and racing through courses in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Also on the Mega Drive/Genesis is Road Rash II, which puts players in the position of a racer in a dubiously legal race, engaging in combat against other competitors and trying to out run the police.

A dose of 1990s nostalgia can be found in Biker Mice from Mars on the Super Nintendo. A tie-in to the animated series of the same name, the player takes the role of one of six racers from the TV series and engages in a series of motorcycle races. Players can use cash earned in races to buy bike upgrades, including weapons such as missiles which can be used to disable opponents.

Even Disney fans can get in on the biking action with Disney Sports: Motocross on the Game Boy Advance. Featuring Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pete, gameplay is similar to Excitebike, but with a Disney flavour. A major focus is performing tricks; by collecting diamonds during the stage, the player can perform a trick, which gives a big score boost and an advance in speed.

A more realistic approach can be found in Supercross 2000 on the Nintendo 64, which offers a range of race modes, as well as Freestyle and Practice mode. Season mode lets players try their skills in a full 16-track EA Sports Supercross Series, featuring versions of real tracks, and 25 Supercross riders from the 1998 season.

Alternatively, there is Top Gear Hyperbike, also on N64. This game features three gameplay modes and six tracks, though a Create A Track feature is also included. Developer Snowblind Studios even recorded real motorbike engine sounds to provide a more realistic audio experience for bikers.

Another Nintendo 64 bike racing title has a more sci-fi feel, as Extreme-G brings bike racing into the future, offering a range of weapons such as homing missiles, laser mines and shields. Players race around futuristic courses that thread their way through a post-apocalyptic Earth, trying to win he championships to unlock some of the hidden bikes and levels.

There are plenty of motorcycle racing games available to try on MyEmulator, racing from colourful classics to the gritty and realistic.  Don’t worry if your favourite isn’t here, keep checking back as it may be added in future.
