Tara nara, nara, nara…Batman!

Batman Games

For as long as he’s been starring in box office hits, Batman has been startling gamers with an impressive suite of strong interactive outings. The Caped Crusader has proven perfect for the video game medium courtesy of his time-tested and villain-imprisoning arsenal: a grappling hook, a stylish automobile, any number of improv inventions, and a cunning wit that’s gotten him out of more than a few close calls. But for all his more modern renditions, nothing holds a candle to the licensed gaming heyday of the NES through N64 eras. These days, when Batman shows up for something new it’s an original affair not based upon any particular retelling. But back then, it was not uncommon for games with iconic heroes to recreate a loose rendition of the movies and television shows they’re most known for. You’ll surely see this with MyEmulator’s great (and growing!) offering of classic Batman games.

Batman: The Video Game is far too straightforward a title choice to be constrained to one particular system. Indeed, the aptly-named 1989  release was in fact a series of platformers from developer Sunsoft designed for multiple forms of hardware. Arguably the simplest of the bunch was the Game Boy version, a goofy affair that gives Batman a gun and bizarre cart blanche to shoot all his enemies with a gun. The NES and Sega Genesis versions are more faithful to the ‘89 film and less prone to depict Bruce Wayne’s infamous alter ego as the murderer he’s simply not supposed to be. The NES version is perhaps the best-known, featuring five thrilling levels and culminating in a difficult duel with the Joker. On Genesis, Batman: The Video Game is especially tough — unlike on NES, there are a limited number of continues. On the flip side? You get to drive around in the Batmobile and Batwing in horizontal, Asteroid-inspired levels. Neat!

One of the most fascinating features of the emulation scene, and something that MyEmulator prides itself upon, is the circulation of rare and sometimes even canceled video games. Take Batman: Revenge of the Joker on SNES, for example. The Sega Genesis version of Revenge of the Joker is a 16-bit remake of the NES Return of the Joker — an odd little name change, but one that stands to differentiate the prettier Genesis release from the already-atmospheric NES original. As for the SNES version, it… doesn’t exist. Or rather, it only exists in internet archives like ours because it was never actually released. Modeled after the Genesis remake, it was completed before rights issues prevented it from proper publishing. And yet here it is, in perfectly preserved ROM form!

Konami, the legendary publisher behind such classics as Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania, got their talented team to tackle a game adaptation of 1992’s epic Batman Returns for SNES. Often hailed as one of the finest beat ‘em ups from the genre’s golden age, Batman Returns brings players on an action-packed tour of seven key scenes from the movie, including multiple locations in Gotham as well as the climactic Arctic World hideout. Each scene section contains a pivotal boss fight. Less popular (though well worth a dabble for any gaming historian) is Acclaim’s adaptation of Batman Forever, with its frustrating level design and excessively punishing difficulty. Tim Follin’s epic soundtrack, however? A total banger.

Back at Konami, development was hard at work on The Adventures of Batman & Robin, a more well-received chapter based upon the excellent 1990s animated series. An action/adventure game, The Adventures of Batman & Robin frequently makes use of Bruce Wayne’s zany gadgets in delightful investigative fashion as players comb through intricate levels for clues on how to proceed. In a lot of ways, this almost feels like the basis for much later games like Arkham Asylum.

And over on the N64 front, our growing library of Batman games presently includes Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, which shouldn’t be confused with the NES Return of the Joker… truly, if there is one recurring issue with these innovative games it’s a lack of creative titles! Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker owes its roots to a movie sequel of the underrated Batman Beyond television series and affords players numerous customization options such as several suits of armor.
