Nowadays, most major American sports leagues appear in one or two annual video game franchises. In the earlier days of video games, that was not the case. You could scan any shelf in a game shop and find all sorts of games for each sport, each with different licensing arrangements, looks, and gameplay. It was very hard to find the best ones to sink your time into, but MyEmulator has thankfully saved you that trouble with a nice selection of retro baseball video games.

A good place to start is Triple Play 2000. At the time of its release, this PlayStation and Nintendo 64 title was regarded as one of the better baseball games of its time. You can enjoy a blast from the past with the game’s roster, which mirrors the MLB’s 1999 roster and allows gamers to enjoy the presence of legendary players like Sammy Sosa. For more Nintendo 64 baseball action, you could try out Mike Piazza’s Strike Zone, though that game was a bit too ambitious for what its developers were ultimately capable of pulling off. It’s no Triple Play.

You could also check out Cal Ripken Jr. Baseball. While the game unfortunately lacked official MLB licensing (in fact, the only real player that you can play as in the game is Cal Ripken Jr. himself), it is still a good time and a great look at SNES-era baseball video game mechanics.

Plenty of excellent handheld baseball games are available on MyEmulator as well. For example, take a look at Bases Loaded, a Game Boy port of an arcade great that spawned seven sequels. You could also check out the Game Boy Color versions of All-Star Baseball 2000 and All-Star Baseball 2001.

Of course, while MLB simulations are plenty of fun, you could also throw realism out the window and check out a zanier title like Cyber Stadium Series – Base Wars. In Cyber Stadium, baseball team owners of the distant 24th-century future have grown dissatisfied with overpaid human players, instead filling their teams with optimized robots. This game absolutely oozes charm, and occasionally duking it out with the robots is great fun. And, if one futuristic baseball game was not enough, you can also check out Super Baseball 2020, a game that sees baseball advance to the far-off year of … 2020, where human players use jet packs, armor, and more to square off with robotic players. Also take a look at Bad News Baseball, a pretty standard baseball experience with some quirks, such as rabbit umpires.

Baseball is a wonderful sport. It’s no surprise that dozens of video games have tried to capture the magic of the game over the years. A few have succeeded – you can see that for yourself on MyEmulator – and they’re still totally fun to play today. So sit back, relax, and play ball!
