Super Street Fighter 2 (AKA SSF2 スーパーストリートファイターII -The New Challengers- in Japan) is the last game in the Street Fighter II series to make it to the SNES. Hadoken! A GREAT fighting game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System that was followed by Street Fighter Alpha 2 from the Alpha series.

While Capcom did not do a complete overhaul for Super Street Fighter 2, it features much bigger changes compared to its predecessor. One of the more notable difference would be the addition of the four new fighters, namely secret agent Cammy, Fei Long, the Jamaican DeeJay, and T. Hawk. Though Cammy has always been a crowd favorite among the female characters, the rest of the three all seemed average or even annoying.

The existing fighters have also been modified a bit to not lag behind their new counterparts. Ryu was given a “flaming” fireball. Ken, on the other hand, gained a flaming Dragon Punch which has higher damage than Ryu’s – finally creating a significant difference between the two fighters. The rest of the characters are also subtly changed here and there in order to enhance the gameplay of Super Street Fighter 2 a bit.

With regard to gameplay, it is worth nothing that Street Fighter 2 is much slower than you’d expect, and even slower than the “Turbo” version. Also, those who like to play in groups would be happy to know that there are a lot of multiplayer modes to choose from, including the “Elimination” tournament. In terms of graphics, a lot of the stuff are the same, with the addition of some vibrant new backgrounds and character animation.

Simply put, those who are used to the super-fast gameplay of Street Fighter 2 Turbo might be a wee bit disappointed by the slow pace of this game for SNES. However, a little getting used to the pace would have you fully appreciate the Super Street Fighter 2 to be the better and more accomplished of the two.

It has been ported to SNES (this version), Arcade (original), Sega Genesis, Amiga, PC-Dos, Sharp X68000, PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Nintendo Virtual Console.
