Super Ninja Boy (SNES)

Super Ninja Boy (AKA Super Chinese World – スーパーチャイニーズワールド Suupaa Chainiizu Waarudo in Japan) is a 2D Ninja action RPG video game developed and published by Culture Brain for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1991.

This game isn’t your typical role-playing game (RPG). It combines the open-world elements of RPGs and the exciting fights of action games, presenting a different experience for Super NES owners.

Super Ninja Boy has a two player system wherein the second player can join in at any point of the game. Player 1 controls the main character named Jack (red), while player 2 uses Ryu (blue).

Players will navigate their way through its fictional setting called Chinalands. This means that players will have to go through tunnels, forests, mountains, and even cities. But in each journey, random enemies will pop out and that’s where the Super Ninja Boy turns into a side scrolling action game to fight foes.

Jack and Ryu can beat up enemies using punches, nunchucks, as well as by throwing a shuriken or the foe itself. The characters can even learn to use magic skills such as a fireball or super jump.

All this sounds amazing until players realize that they can hurt or even kill their teammate by mistakenly using all these deadly skills on one another. So it’s best that players be mindful before attacking. Luckily, the game has a revive option, but they will have to find the right house on the world map.

In this world map, there will be cities wherein players can restock supplies, learn skills, heal themselves, and even revive dead teammates. So having enough items and skills in between each city is crucial to survival.

Super Ninja Boy, aside from the random goons that show up, features boss fights that will truly test the skills and teamwork of its players. Boss battles are fought using the more traditional turn-based style seen in most RPGs.

Its background music though is less than stellar. It’s actually boring enough that you might fall asleep during long journeys in the game. Aside from that, Super Ninja Boys is one of the early games that you must have in your arsenal. It will truly test your strategy-making and fighting skills. Teamwork and preparation are keys to finish this classic SNES game.

Super Ninja Boy game has been ported to SNES and Nintendo Virtual Console.
