Street Fighter Alpha 2 (AKA Street Fighter Zero 2 -ストリートファイターZERO 2 Sutorīto Faitā Zero Tsū in Japan) is a 2D anime-style 1vs1 fighting video game developed by Capcom and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996. It was followed by Street Fighter Alpha 3, the last installment of the series.

The Alpha series recast the well-known World Warriors as a little younger and versatile. Capcom also added more fighters in this game from the classic Final Fight and SF franchises. For those who are keeping track of the details of the series, the Japanese schoolgirl Sakura first made its appearance in Alpha 2.

The players in the 1990s loved this game. Street Fighter Alpha 2 also received praise from critics. However, there is a problem with the SNES version if you compare it with the arcade version. The graphics of this game in SNES may bother you because they looked like a compressed version of the arcade source, just so the game can properly run on the 16-bit hardware of Nintendo.

You will notice this if you have tried the coin-op machine or other ports on other gaming consoles. Some characters have been eliminated because there is no space for them.

Another obvious problem is the load times. You will experience a load time of about five seconds as the game will pause on the “Fight!” screen. It may even take longer than that and you may think that the system has frozen, but there is nothing wrong with your console. It is just the game itself.

Even with these problems, Street Fighter Alpha 2 offers a pretty good game as it has an excellent fighting system at its foundation. The fighting design in this game is really impressive. If you have some friends to play against, any SF game can be a good choice. Although the Alpha 2 version is a bit slower, it is still a brilliant take on the popular franchise.

The backgrounds are outstanding as well. Chun Li displays a remarkable breakthrough in the game’s graphical abilities, which took her renowned China street platform and revamped it to one with a small crowd of people riding bicycles in the background.

Characters in SF Alpha 2

SF Alpha 2 brings back all 13 characters from Street Fighter Alpha, with M. Bison, Akuma, and Dan now being immediately selectable as playable characters. In addition to the Alpha roster, this game includes Dhalsim and Zangief, both from Street Fighter 2 online, Gen, an assassin from the original, Rolento, a member of the Mad Gear gang who originally appeared in Final Fight, and newcomer Sakura.

You will rarely feel so effortless when playing a fighting video game in console form, but you can control the Alpha 2 so freely. The responses are extremely precise and collision detection stays inch-perfect.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 game has been ported to Arcade, Sony PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Sega Saturn, SNES (this version), Windows, and Nintendo Virtual Console.
