Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (SNES)
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie is a 2D side-scrolling beat ’em up video game developed by Natsume and published by Bandai for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995. The four reviewers of Electronic Gaming Monthly considered the game a mediocre Final Fight (1991) clone which has decent graphics but suffers from a lack of variety of both moves and enemies.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie is essentially a sequel to the SNES game based on the TV series of the same title. While it sold very well in the SNES (as well as in other platforms), it is not hard to feel sceptical if the gameplay will hold up in the present day. This review will see if this game has stood the test of time.
This game is an update of sorts to the first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers game; it is still a classic side-scrolling beat em’up game based on the characters of the movie.
You can choose from 9 different characters; Tommy, Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Zach, Trini, Adam, Aisha, and Rocky. Not only can you play using the Rangers, but you can also use their Zords for specific missions. All 6 stages of the game are based on the events on the movie, linked to some events from the TV show’s second season.
The major update for this game compared to the first Power Rangers game is the introduction of a legit 2-player option. You and your friend can pick 2 of your favourite rangers and proceed in beating up everything in sight.
The graphics for this game is solid but unremarkable. There is enough detail to recognize the characters, but the rendering of the backgrounds and characters is not as solid compared to the first Power Rangers game. The game is not that difficult to master, and you can complete the game within a few hours. It does not offer the same level of freedom of movement associated with beat-em-ups featuring free roaming spaces, but there are enough challenges to keep things interesting. The addition of a 2-player option is a massive upgrade in our opinion because you can now share the fun with a friend.
A lot of people compare the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie to the first game based on the TV series, and a lot are left unsatisfied. While the original was slightly better in just about every department and arguably was released at a better time, this game for the SNES is still a great game worth playing again.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie game has been ported to SNES (this version), Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, Game Boy and Game Gear.
