Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems (SNES) Game
Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems (AKA Marvel Super Heroes In War of the Gems, マーヴルスーパーヒーローズ ウォーオブザジェム Māvuru Supā Hīrōzu: Wō obu za Jemu in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling action platform video game developed and released by Capcom for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) 16-bit console in 1996.
During that time, the next generation of video game consoles, including the Sony PlayStation 1 and the Nintendo 64, started to emerge, making this game somewhat overshadowed during the time. This makes this game one of the more underappreciated gems in the SNES library.
Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems lets you take control of 5 Marvel superheroes: Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, and Wolverine. Each of these characters is unique, each having its own set of skills, characteristics, moves, and combinations. As you progress, you will unlock Infinity Gems that you can use before beginning a stage to get specific gameplay advantages.
The strategic use of characters and gems provides players with the best chance of winning. You will battle against different Marvel super-villains on each level, before climaxing with a final showdown against Thanos.
The graphics of this game is very nice; it is as refined as it can possibly get for games in the SNES era. The backgrounds are quite detailed, and the characters have the usual cartoon feel from comic / TV show-based games of the time. The gameplay is a bit on the challenging side: even the first stages are quite hard to master.
You will need a combination of strategy, knowledge of character skills, timely use of power-ups, and lots of trial and error to become good at this game. As a bonus, this game features a lot of cameos from different characters within the Marvel brand.
Released at the tail end of the SNES’s lifespan, Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems did not get its just recognition from both gamers and comic fans alike. However, it is a game that more than deserves some appreciation. With gameplay that is aging well, most especially when it comes to the fighting elements, War of the Gems is still a joy to play even to this day. Without any kind of doubt, this is one of the best games in the Capcom games collection.
