Gradius 3 (AKA Gradius III or グラディウスIII~伝説から神話ヘ~ guradiusu III densetsu kara shinwa e in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling shoot ’em up video game developed and published by Konami for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and other systems in 1990.

Similar to previous Gradius instalments, like Gradius 1, players get to pilot the Vic Viper in a single-ship struggle against Bacterion Empire. Help is sent in the form of power-ups that players pick up off the map and from decimated enemy ships.

What sets Gradius III apart from its predecessors and competitors is its option to customize the power-ups players could use in-game. Before the game starts, players get to choose between prearranged weapon load-outs or set up their own arsenal in Edit Mode.

Although it doesn’t feature an entirely new game mechanic, Gradius 3 does have a bonus level which features a 3d pilot view, where players need to avoid colliding with the walls. It is an interesting addition although a bit out of place in the game as a whole.

Another downside to the game is that when players get hit by enemies or enemy bullets, all power-ups are gone and the ship reverts to its initial set-up. Although the game continues, having no power-ups makes it impossible to beat the current level, especially if experienced late-game.

Gradius 3 features an environment which classifies the game as 2.5d. It has vivid color graphics and comparatively more ambient music than its predecessors. The dulled down soundtrack makes it easier to concentrate on the game instead of being distracted by gaudy audio.

As for gameplay, controls are much the same as players can move the ship forwards, backwards, up and down. Its maps feature more complex landscapes in some stages. There are slowdowns when a lot of enemies and graphics occupy the screen, but whenever enemies are cleared, the game goes back to its normal speed.

The game features single-player and two-player cooperative modes. Initially, it has easy and hard difficulty settings but a third one—the arcade mode—can be unlocked when you beat the game.

Overall, Gradius III is a solid shooter which honors its classic counterparts. Despite its flaws, retrogamers who are easily immersed in shoot ’em ups will enjoy this game.

Gradius 3 game has been ported to Arcade, SNES (this version), Nintendo Virtual Console.
