EVO: Search for Eden (SNES)
EVO: Search for Eden (AKA 46 Okunen Monogatari ~Harukanaru Eden E~ or ４６億年物語 はるかなるエデンへ in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling RPG action video game developed by Almanic and published by Enix for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992 – 1993.
Enix was notorious for releasing games that can be hard to obtain in North America. EVO: Search for Eden is one of those games. Sadly, it’s also arguably one of the best games ever developed for the Nintendo’s 16-bit home gaming console. It is a rare treasure and still proves worthy to be played today.
Gameplay is simple. The character starts as a small fish that had to evolve by eating other smaller creatures. Swim. Chomp. Evolve. There is some background story to why this lowly creature was chosen to evolve. But that’s for the gamers to discover. Evolving, unfortunately, is not a walk in the park. The hero can get smothered by a being seemingly weaker than him. Imagine how boss fights will be given this situation. It can be outright murder. This difficulty shuns the shallow gamers and leaves only those willing to endure the growing pains. The reward is a rich gaming experience that has made EVO: Search for Eden for Super Nintendo memorable.
Controls are as simple as the gameplay. Not much fast clicking required which can be a bit boring to some. But control layout is perfect.
Graphics are not the strong suit of EVO: Search for Eden and that was expected. It was meant to be a game only for the tough gamers who are immune to rage quitting. But the characters are beautiful and evolving body parts were animated just right. Not too fancy but significant.
Background music and sound effects are also not impressive as far as the capabilities of the SNES sound chip are concerned. They were just enough to keep the player from falling asleep.
EVO: Search for Eden is a gem not only because it is hard to find but because it is a well thought out game. It’s not for the casual fast paced loving gamer but for those who are patient enough to see the protagonist go through 4.8 billion years of evolution will be rewarded in the end.
