Release year: 1992 | Players: 1 player | Developed by Chunsoft (Enix)
Dragon Quest 5 (AKA Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu no Hanayome, ドラゴンクエストV 天空の花嫁 Doragon Kuesuto Faibu Tenkū no Hanayome in Japan) is a great adventure role-playing game (RPG) developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix (now Square Enix) for the Super Famicom / SNES console in 1992. It is the fifth installment of the Dragon Warrior / Dragon Quest saga.
What makes Dragon Quest 5 so attractive to many SNES players is its simplicity. You play the role of the hero, a descendant of the great Erdick, and it is your task to defeat the Dragonlord and save the world. In order to do that, you must journey towards his palace.
Along the way, you will be going through different towns and stumbling upon monsters that you have to destroy using your weapons or your spells. Winning these battles with monsters will increase your experience points and, eventually, level up your character.
There are many different paths that your hero can take, so it will take a long time for you to get bored if you want to explore the many possibilities of the game.
Learning how to control your character’s movement on the screen is quite easy, too. Just use the directional arrows to make him move and use the A & B buttons to interact with the other characters, monsters, and objects. With these simple controls and gameplay, understanding the game is a breeze.
The graphics of Dragon Quest V also deserve a lot of praise. The bright colors and well-designed environment make the game so much more appealing. You might notice that the backgrounds are a bit repetitive, but that is something you would understand because of the limitations of the console. The monsters and characters are more detailed than those in the earlier versions, but they can also use a bit of improvement, too.
The music and sound effects are very catchy. The creepy music you hear inside the dungeons is a favorite among many because they add a scare factor to the game.
Overall, the game can use some upgrades, but it’s not bad for an early version of an RPG. It is one of the titles that inspired modern favorites like the Sims. If you enjoy RPG video games, you must definitely give Dragon Quest 5 a try.
