Captain Tsubasa 3 (AKA Captain Tsubasa 3: The Kaiser’s Challenge or Captain Tsubasa III: Koutei no Chousen / キャプテン翼III —皇帝の挑戦— in Japan) is a 2D RPG soccer video game developed and published by Tecmo for the Super Famicom / Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. Its plot came from a Japanese manga series. The game has two modes: The All Star mode and Kick Off mode.
Tsubasa plays as the captain of the Japanese soccer team. People already saw his potential in playing this game at his young age. After several years, Tsubasa traveled to Brazil to pursue his dream—to become a famous soccer player. When he went back to Japan, the Japanese soccer team chose him to be the captain.
Captain Tsubasa can dribble, pass, shoot the ball, and block the opposing team’s players. His stamina drops when he dribbles the ball, passes it in a special way, or shoots, tackles, and blocks a player. Tsubasa will not be able to play well if he loses more strength, though it does regenerate.
You can control Captain Tsubasa using the D-pad. Let him dribble the ball in the arena, and choose a command. The menu will pop up when you press the B button. For the command, Captain Tsubasa can pass, shoot, and face the players from the other team. The players from that group will try to block you to steal the ball, and that is why you must pick a command to stop them. The same thing happens when the ball is on the opposite team.
Captain Tsubasa 3 has two sets of background sound. One of these is for you, and the other is for player 2 or the CPU. The background music for Captain Tsubasa will play each time he holds the ball. These background sounds are inspirational as they form a striking atmosphere.
The game has impressive visuals. The players (and even the announcer) all look good. In general, the visuals are colorful and bright.
Pros & Cons
- Great graphics
- Good sounds
- Easy to play
- Simple controls
- Loses its thrill when you have all the star players
Captain Tsubasa 3 is undeniably one of the best soccer games for the SNES. Though its gameplay isn’t necessarily flawless, the fun is definitely there.
Captain Tsubasa 3 game has only been ported to the Super Famicom (SNES).
