Game Review

Spider-Man is one of the coolest heroes out there, so it’s fitting that he arguably has the strongest video game catalog of any superhero next to Batman, largely thanks to the vigilante’s incredible transition to the 3D era. There’s just something undeniably fun about webslinging through one virtual recreation of New York after the other. There’s a handful of Spider-Man games that have a powerful legacy (or legacy in the making) today, but before classic titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Ultimate Spider-Man, there were early forays like Spider-Man on Nintendo 64 – a direct port of Activision’s first experiment with the hero’s license that originally released on PlayStation in 2000. Nowadays, the Nintendo 64 port holds up a bit rough, but it’s still a decently fun superpowered romp for those who can stomach funky controls and an underwhelming gameplay scope.

Unlike later games, Spider-Man on Nintendo 64 is not an open-world experience built for acrobatic exploration. Instead, you’ll explore New York through a handful of different levels, encountering plenty of representatives from the webhead’s colorful rogues’ gallery along the way.

Luckily, even without a fully open New York to swing through, many of Spidey’s iconic powers are still available for use in traversing levels and in combat. Spider-Man can crawl on walls and ceilings, swing, and zip between certain special points. With his trusty web cartridges, Spider-Man is a force to be feared in battle – he can web up bad guys, power up his attacks, and create explosive barriers. All in all, Spider-Man puts forth some pretty basic, action-packed superhero gameplay without all of the fine-tuning and freedom that we’ve come to expect ever since Spider-Man 2. It can be a bit janky at times, but it could be much worse.

Spider-Man Marvel - Review

The story is standard Saturday morning superhero fare, opening up with a whole bunch of stuff going wrong at an initially innocuous Science Expo 2000. There’s an imposter Spider-Man, Eddie Brock has a flare-up with the Venom symbiote, and there’s a strange, thick fog suddenly blanketing the city. On your adventure, you’ll encounter plenty of familiar friends and foes, such as Black Cat, Human Torch, Daredevil, Scorpion, Lizard, Carnage, Mysterio, and plenty more. It’s a tour de force of all of Peter Parker’s associates and sworn enemies that you know and love. You’ll be constantly delighted throughout the seven-ish hour adventure as you encounter some of your favorite heroes and villains at seemingly every turn.

If you’re down for an older superhero title from before the power and innovation that stemmed from games like Spider-Man 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum, an old-school action-adventure like Spider-Man might be just what the doctor ordered. Ultimately, it’s a quick game with decent gameplay and plenty of fun comic book energy. It hasn’t aged perfectly, but if you go in expecting a nostalgia trip or a fun, slightly janky romp, you’ll come out fine on the other side.
