Rygar (AKA アルゴスの戦士 Arugosu no Senshi or Warrior of Argus in Japan) is a Nintendo classic originally developed by Tecmo and released in 1986 for Famicom in Japan and later ported in 1987 for Nintendo Entertainment System in the United States. It is a 2D action-adventure platform video game themed with fantasy. It has an arcade version of the same name. However, the arcade game plays differently than the NES version: The former is like a standard side-scrolling action game while the latter is an open world action-adventure platform.
Basically, the game follows the story of a legendary hero who was revived to life to defeat the evil Ligar and reinstate the Door of Peace in the land of Argool. Rygar is equipped with a special weapon called the Diskarmer, a flying shield pierced with spikes that functions like a yo-yo.
The gameplay occurs in both side-scrolling and top-down stages. Unlike the arcade version which is limited to a side-scrolling region throughout the game, the NES version provides you with not only an overhead stage but also role-playing elements which you can use to your enjoyment. The storyline is basic, but pretty good, nonetheless. Greek overtones are evident in the game, which is quite impressive even though it’s complicated.
The graphics of Rygar oozes Nintendo classic that it appeared more than just an ordinary 8-bit game. The enemies and characters are well crafted and designed. The boss designs look awesome because of the details and solid appearance. The music and sound effects are excellent as well. The main music theme added to the pumping factor of the game, thus boosting the player’s motivation of finishing the game.
The controls are also great, as maneuvering the characters is not a difficult task. Since the NES controller only features simple buttons, the game’s controls are not complex and easy to use. Tecmo, the publisher of the game, really did well with crafting the controls of the game. However, this is a pretty difficult game as there is so much mapping to go through. You probably would find it hard to go from place to place.
Overall, Rygar is a must-try for all Nintendo fanatics out there, especially those looking for classics that are fantasy-themed and action-adventure platformers.
Rygar game has been ported to Arcade (original), Sharp X68000, C64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, NES (this version), Master System, Lynx, Mobile, Virtual Console, PlayStation 4
