Mega Man 3 (NES)
Mega Man 3 (AKA ロックマン3 Dr.ワイリーの最期!? “Rockman 3: The End of Dr. Wily!?” in Japan) is a 2D action platform video game developed by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. It is the third installment of the Mega Man series.
Capcom had huge hits with the release of Mega Man and Mega Man 2 for the NES. And just when critics think there’s not much more to improve on the series, the game developer took it up a notch higher. The result was a solid game with everything you could ever hope for in the Mega Man series for the 8-bit game console.
The developers knew that coming up with eight new Robot Masters would not be enough to impress the already spoiled followers of the Mega Man series so they included a few new mechanics to the gameplay. The slide move made avoiding attacks easier and also allowed access to certain areas. The game also introduced Rush, Mega Man’s new canine sidekick, which has abilities of his own that the hero can use in tricky situations.
Control is always an issue with other fast paced adventure games but not in the Mega Man series. There’s no lag whatsoever that can easily ruin the experience. Button assignments are easy to learn and remember even to those playing any Mega Man game for the first time.
As usual, this third iteration is a fine example of what gratifyingly good graphics should be. Background details are amazing and each of the different levels has individual theme assigned. Game slowdowns are very few and can go unnoticed because of the impressive visuals. The Robot Masters are very detailed and well animated. Surely Capcom maximized the use of NES graphics chip.
One of the most impressive features of Mega Man 1 and 2 is the music, and Mega Man 3 follows suit. New tracks are sure to remain inside your head long after you have finished playing the game. Sound effects are aplenty and clear.
Just when fans think nothing can be done to improve the Mega Man saga on the 8-bit Nintendo NES given the system’s limitations, Capcom has another breakthrough in Mega Man 3. A must in every retro video game collection.
Mega Man 3 has been ported to Nintendo Entertainment System (this version), PlayStation, smartphones, Virtual Console, PlayStation Network (for PS3 & PSP)
