Game Review
Mega Man is the genesis of one of the most acclaimed, influential, and quality action platforming series across the entire medium. With a rockin’ soundtrack, tons of powers to collect, and incredibly unforgiving difficulty, the Blue Bomber’s inaugural adventure made one heck of an entrance. Unfortunately, the game takes a few steps back when judged by today’s standards. Mega Man has a notorious case of NES-era difficulty. A plethora of challenges are very, very tough, but not by virtue of a rewarding design meant to test and push your abilities. Instead, a lot of the game pulls your teeth with simple tricks, cheap gimmicks, and unpredictable patterns. While Mega Man is mostly a tight, colorful, popping title, its age has caught up with it, and the initial “wow” factor wore off a long time ago.
The player is initially faced with six levels, each throwing screen after screen of trials and tribulations at Mega Man until finishing with a showdown against a super-powered boss. Upon taking down the bad guy and finishing a level, Mega Man can snag their power and make it into a gun to carry through the rest of the game. Before long, you’ll be smothering enemies in fire, ice, blades, and more. Different bosses have different strengths and weaknesses, too, so if a particular battle is getting you down, consider trying to earn a different power-up in another level before trying your luck again.
The levels, which rely on a combination of platforming and combat, are unfortunately and unavoidably cheap. Extremely erratic enemy movements, puzzles that need at least a little trial-and-error, and platforming layouts that just don’t quite mesh right with the controls. Mega Man is brimming with old school NES difficulty. If you aren’t down ith that, you shouldn’t bother with the game.
Mega Man makes the most of its original 8-bit hardware. Colorful environments, smooth gameplay, and a glorious retro soundtrack all make the experience quite representative of some of the best presentation of the era. Energetic tunes, vibrant missions, and gameplay smooth enough to invoke the feeling that, while the game may trick you often, it’s still your fault when you lose. With how great everything looks, feels, and sounds, it’s hard to get too angry when a challenging segment claims your life fifty times in a row.
Age left its mark on Mega Man, but patient players will still enjoy the solid platformer underneath. If you haven’t tried this series before and don’t have the patience for a challenge that will often test your resolve, you’re best off leaving this one alone. However, if you’re ready to sink your teeth into a retro action platformer that would sooner sink its teeth into you, Mega Man is worth grappling with. Should you emerge victorious, you’ll have deeply acquainted yourself with one of the more important games in the medium’s history, and you’ll be that much closer to thwarting NES-era difficulty for good.
