Double Dragon 2: The Revenge (AKA ダブルドラゴンII ザ・リベンジ Daburu Doragon II: Za Ribenji in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling beat ’em up video game developed by Technōs Japan for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. It is the third installment in the Double Dragon Series and the prequel of Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones.
Double Dragon was first released as an arcade game back in 1987. It quickly gained popularity for its beat ’em up intense gameplay, as well as the great visuals and theme music. It was then ported to NES which became a hit, too. Naturally, the franchise needed to spawn a sequel, so Double Dragon 2: The Revenge was released.
Like any other beat ’em up title, you will be facing a never-ending barrage of fighters in Double Dragon 2. This time, though, the designers decided to tweak the controls, making fighting in close quarters more balanced and fair. Also in this episode, you can have a playing buddy fight beside you as one of the Lee brothers. Two player co-op is where the Double Dragon 2: The Revenge really shines. It was one of the more obvious improvements from the original port.
Like the previous release, controls are solid and responsive. Button configurations are simple, intuitive, and spot-on. Pressing the A or B button now makes your fighter kick in that direction which makes fighting enemies from either side easier. A jump or special move is executed by pressing both buttons at the same time.
Double Dragon 2: The Revenge on NES features some of the most impressive visuals during the 8-bit era. Characters, both heroes and villains, are sufficiently sized and detailed. Animations are fluid and backgrounds are beautifully drawn. It was an achievement, given the console’s limitations.
The game has been ported to Arcade, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, Game Boy, Sega Mega Drive, MSX, Nintendo NES (this version), TurboGrafx-CD, and ZX Spectrum.
