Cobra Triangle is a racing and action video game that was released in 1989. Rare created this game, and Nintendo released it for its NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). Even though it was released in the 1980s, the visuals are displayed in a 3D isometric perspective. CVG, a UK-based video game magazine, praised its gameplay and graphics, and GamesRadar, a popular entertainment website, included Cobra Triangle to their top 10 NES games.
In Cobra Triangle, you control a combat speedboat to clear all 25 levels. Some of these stages end in boss fights, but the main goals are defusing bombs, winning races, and saving swimmers while hustling to get power-ups and lives.
Cobra Triangle has three modes with varying difficulties depending on the level:
- In races, you must avoid obstacles while you outpaced other competitors. Your boat can attack and sink other racers, fly by passing through ramps, and collect power-ups.
- In bomb diffusing modes, you need to find and transfer four bombs to a specified site.
- In rescuing activities, rogue boats drag swimmers to drown, so you have to destroy them before their kills reach a certain number. The dragged swimmers must be returned to the map’s center.
Aside from battling scoundrels, looking for bombs, rescuing swimmers, and trying to win races, you must also avoid sea monsters, pirates, and whirlpools and move against strong currents to achieve your objectives.
Cobra Triangle is impressive and unique, and it has diverse goals. This game may look outdated today, but in the late 1980s and in the 90s, kids and even adults were addicted to this fast-paced action game. The gameplay is challenging, but it doesn’t reach the point wherein you have to repeat every stage just to proceed to the next level. You might say that this is just another racing video game, but if you try to play it, you will see that it’s a masterpiece.
