Fatal Fury Special (NEO-GEO)
Fatal Fury Special (AKA 餓狼伝説SPECIAL Garou Densetsu Special, “Legend of the Hungry Wolf Special” in Japan) is a 2D fighting video game developed and published by SNK for the NEO-GEO system in 1993. Later, the game was ported to other gaming systems and was followed by Fatal Fury 3.
Fatal Fury Special is essentially the same as Fatal Fury 2 on the visuals. But, it’s packed with a lot more features. The story follows the death of Geese Howard in the first Fatal Fury. Then, a mysterious man sponsors the new “King of Fighters” tournament. In the single-player mode, the challenger tries to defeat fighters in search of Geese’s killer.
The game is an updated version of FF2. There are system changes which include faster game speed and a new combo system. In the single-player mode, the player has to fight 15 opponents before the final match with Ryo.
It’s quite a difficult game, but the controls are easy. There aren’t any super attacks. It’s just old-school big-damage-style gameplay.
Each stage and opponent has their own specific sounds and background music. During matches, each attack and block has sounds that are on the right timing. Players who enjoy fighting games with lots of effects and great music should turn the volume up when playing Fatal Fury Special.
The game is visually beautiful compared to other 2D fighting games. The characters are huge and chunky which are old-school style sprites. Their movements have been researched, studied, and animated well.
Backgrounds have got to be one of the important visual aspects of any fighting game. FF2’s backgrounds are amazing and can be considered works of art. Some of the most beautiful backgrounds in the game have to be in Mai’s and Krauser’s stages.
Round 1… Fight!
FFS has 16 playable characters and extremely hard challenges and stages. It may take quite some time to finish the single-player mode. It can take hours or maybe even several days to finish. After defeating Ryo, players come back to the game to beat Ryo again while trying not to lose a single round.
Fatal Fury Special gets, in our opinion, an average of 9 out of 10. It’s a well-loved classic by old-school game fans. It’s also considered one of the best versus fighting games of its time by many.
Fatal Fury Special game has been ported to Arcade, Neo Geo (this version), Neo-Geo CD, FM Towns, Game Gear, Mega-CD, SFC / SNES, TurboGrafx-CD, PlayStation 2, Virtual Console, Sharp X68000, Xbox Live Arcade, Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch.
