Eight Man (NEO-GEO)
Eight Man (AKA 8 Man or エイトマン, Eitoman, 8マン in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling beat ’em up video game developed by Pallas and released by SNK for the NEO-GEO console in 1991. It was inspired the manga series that bears the same name. Eight Man is a superhero who defends the world against the cyborgs, robots, and zombies. Interestingly though, the game does not feature any of the villains from the manga series.
Eight Man uses 3 of the 4 default buttons. “A” is used for the basic punch, “B” is for hopping, while “C” is for special attacks (such as the bomb). Pressing the buttons “A” and “B” at the same time will release a turning kick, while holding “B” and “down” lets the character slide. The character’s moves are typically limited to right and left.
Gamers can play in pairs. If two players team up, one of them will play as 8 Man while the other will act as Nine Man—Eight Man’s partner in fighting crime. There are four stages to navigate, and every stage is separated into segments that lengthen the gameplay. Moreover, the game features a unique level design where the protagonist constantly runs fast down the highway. It’s interwoven all over the game.

Without a doubt, this game has a great comic book design. Players will notice a neon color scheme on some scenes, but the rest will be in either blue or gray. The animations for attacks are awesome, and the game usually scales the characters inside and outside with no hitches.
Power-ups were made available in the game. Players can use them to increase their attack capacity and bomb attacks. The controls for this game are responsive. Compared to other video games, the speeds in Eight Man are simply window dressing—in other words, it has no direct impact on the gameplay. The title is not terrible in terms of replay value, but it’s definitely limited in this aspect.
In general, EightMan is a nice video game for anime lovers, especially for fans of the manga series. The graphics are fine, and the bomb attacks and power-ups make the game a bit interesting.
Eight Man game has been ported to Arcade and Neo Geo (this version).
