Mario Kart DS (NDS)
Mario Kart DS (AKA マリオカートDS Mario Kāto Dī Esu) is a 3D kart racing video game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS (NDS) handheld console in 2005. Do you like feeling the speed in your hands? If so, this game is for you!
The game features a series of single-player Grand Prix tournaments with 4 races for each competition. It has five single-player game modes. These are Time Trial, Grand Prix, Versus, Mission and Battle. Mario Kart DS surprisingly comes with a multiplayer mode too where you’ll compete with 8 players.
Mario Kart DS has 8 Grand Prix tournaments and 32 races. These races are not instantly available. You must win one race to unlock the next one. 16 of the 32 races are all-new. The last 4, however, are comprised of the classic circuits taken from N64 (Mario Kart 64), SNES (Super Mario Kart), GBA and GameCube versions of the game. The tracks have everything from basic figure-eight routes and beach passages to road races. While passing through these tracks, you must avoid traffic and run fast all over the big pinball table.
Mario Kart DS is loaded of exciting challenges. For instance, Grand Prix tournaments could be challenged in 50cc, 100cc or 150cc courses. Time Trial mode requires the player to finish the course right away by using one, two or three mushrooms. In Vs mode, you race on your favorite track versus the computer-controlled players or in the local multiplayer. In Mission mode, of course, you have missions to complete.
The map screen shows your location on a circuit and the locations of your traps, power-ups and opponents. A column on the left bottom part of the screen lets you track your positions in each race. This column will also show your opponents’ recent armaments. To win each race, you must keep watching out this column especially when the race is about to end.
Your vehicle will gain speed increases as you move forward. Also, your opponents become more and more aggressive in each race, so the game will be more exciting. But before that, of course, you must select your ideal Nintendo character. Mario Kart DS has 8 characters and each one of them has two karts at first. Other karts are unlocked as you progress.
Your kart’s acceleration and speed are two crucial factors to consider when choosing a racer in this game. Those two are obvious factors, but you must consider your handling, drift attributes and weight as well. The differences between kart to kart are noticeable when taking them out on the route. Additionally, you must consider the “items” with a significant comportment on the power-ups’ quality. You’ll receive these items during a race. The Bullet Bill power-up is among the newest items featured in Mario Kart DS.
Mario Kart DS game has been ported to NDS (this version), and Nintendo Virtual Console.
