Kirby Super Star Ultra (AKA Kirby of the Stars Ultra Super Deluxe or 星のカービィ ウルトラスーパーデラックス Hoshi no Kābī Urutora Sūpā Derakkusu in Japan) is a Nintendo DS (NDS) platform video game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo in 2008. It is a remake of the 1996 platformer Kirby Super Star which was produced by the same company for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).
There were no noticeable changes in the graphics of the game. However, Kirby Super Star Ultra certainly looks better in NDS than in SNES. The soundtrack, on the other hand, is clearer and catchier this time.
The game features an almost similar gameplay to the original Kirby; it will barely surprise any old Kirby player. Our little puff ball, Kirby, still flies around the levels and sucks up enemies to use their abilities. The goal remains the same as well—you need to finish the game without depleting your health gauge.
The remake utilizes the touch screen function of NDS so some controls are now done through the use of the stylus pen. It is also worth mentioning that the game adopts more of a float-and-fly system rather than the usual run-and-hop style that most 2D platformers adopt.
Though the gameplay might sound as classic as ever, the developers of the game were still able to incorporate a few new touches to the remake. A second player can now control the sidekick spawned by Kirby. The sidekick, however, vanishes when its rather short health gauge depletes.
Furthermore, the game now offers new modes such as Meta Knightmare Ultra, Revenge of the King, and True Arena that are exclusively found in the NDS version. But of all the exclusive modes, Helper to Hero is the most exciting and challenging.
Overall, the game still offers the classic Kirby experience that everyone loved. The pleasant atmosphere of this game makes it a good platformer for all age groups. While the difficulty level is not that challenging, Kirby Super Star Ultra is definitely one of the greatest platforming NDS games you do not want to miss.
