Game Review

Kirby Super Star Ultra updated the pink puffball’s popular SNES adventure for the DS, with new minigames, graphics, animated cutscenes, and, most importantly, more games to play. Described as a “games omnibus,” Kirby Super Star Ultra features seven distinct main games, five minigames, and a few extra modes, including a few different boss rushes and the option to play through the rest of the game as Meta Knight. Despite the wide ensemble, each game is fundamentally Kirby at its heart, making liberal use of copy abilities, light and easy platforming, and colorful environments.

Like its predecessor, Kirby Super Star Ultra entranced players with its massive compilation of platforming adventures. Largely the same powers, assets, and controls will dictate gameplay in each. There are around two dozen enemies with abilities to steal so that you can flame, slash, and bust your way through every corner of the compilation.

Beyond these core commonalities, however, Kirby Super Star Ultra manages to keep things interesting by exploring different level designs and objectives throughout. The end result is a somewhat variable experience that may make that traditional Kirby easiness a little more palatable for hardcore players. For example, while “Spring Breeze” is essentially a standard remake of Kirby’s Dream Land, “Gourmet Race” challenges players to a speedy series of races against King Dedede. “Dyna Blade” has an overworld map that serves as an homage to Super Mario Bros. 3, and “The Great Cave Offensive” eschews traditional sidescrolling for an experiment with an exploration-based open map. “Revenge of the King” is a notable addition exclusive to Kirby Super Star Ultra that updates “Spring Breeze” with a significant challenge boost, new sections, and extra enemies. Beyond the listed titles, each main game in the greater compilation keeps things fresh but familiar with some minor twist to the basic Kirby formula.

Beyond the main games, competitive minigames and interesting extra modes round out the package. Minigames are pretty simple and frankly do not amount to much more than a temporary distraction. There are three new minigames and two classics in Kirby Super Star Ultra. Each of the new games revolves around using the touchscreen to tap away obstacles or complete simple timing puzzles. The classic games have similarly bland objectives and gameplay.

The extra modes offer a little bit more for major fans of Kirby Super Star Ultra. There are three variants of The Arena, a boss rush mode where Kirby has limited health to run through a gauntlet of each boss in the game. Meta Knightmare Ultra, meanwhile, unlocks the ever-popular, eternally brooding Meta Knight as a playable character in each main game (Except Revenge of the King).

Kirby Super Star Ultra may have plenty of different game experiences, but they are hardly surprising updates to the Kirby formula. If you have played a game in the series before, you should know what to expect here–environments are vibrant and colorful, enemies are abundant and copyable, and the game overall is very, very easy. The minor deviations from game to game are not enough to overcome a serious shroud of easiness. Traditionally aimed at those who are new to platforming games or just interested in a charming old time, many will be bored stiff by a total lack of challenge in Kirby Super Star Ultra. If you want something tough to test your platforming precision, you’ll have to avoid the pink puffball’s lackadaisical adventures offered here. If you’re okay with a pleasant stroll of a platformer, meanwhile, the bite-sized diversions in Kirby Super Star Ultra are well worth a look, and the loads of content may even keep you busy for a long while,
