Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (AKA 悪魔城ドラキュラ 蒼月の十字架 Akumajō Dracula: Sōgetsu no Jūjika in Japan) is an action-adventure RPG platform video game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo DS handheld console in 2005. It is the first Castlevania game that’s made for the NDS and a sequel to Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow that became an instant commercial hit. It was followed by Portrait of Ruin.
The game continues the story of Soma Cruz from Aria of Sorrow. He goes on a quest with his allies to stop a cult from their evil plans of bringing darkness into the world once more.
Konami made tons of improvements on Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. But, they still included several elements from Aria of Sorrow including the “Tactical Soul” system and the dark, gothic setting.
The game is still a type of side-scrolling platformer that’s a better version of Aria of Sorrow. Its controls are smooth and quick, which feels amazing with the NDS’s D-pad and small buttons.
The developers added a touchscreen feature to the game where you need to repeatedly tap or scribble symbols on the screen. This may seem an annoying feature for some gamers, but it seems like all games made for the Nintendo DS need to have this element.
New weapons and an upgrade system were also added to DOS. You can forge new weapons using one or more pieces in your inventory.
As far as 2D games go, Dawn of Sorrow’s graphics may be one of the best. Compared to previous Castlevania games, it’s far more refined and detailed.

The characters, enemies, and bosses are large and recognizable while the castle and other backgrounds are often colorful, but not distracting. They’ve added enhanced graphics and effects that were just enough to make the game almost flawless.
Like its graphics and gameplay, the sound and music of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow have improved much compared to those in AOS. Most of the tracks in the game are quite unforgettable such as “The Beginning”, and “Pitch Black Intrusion”.
The sound effects are clear making the overall experience epic. But, it’s no doubt that the Nintendo DS’s audio capabilities play a big part in delivering an amazing surround sound.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is clearly a great game on the Nintendo DS. This adventure game will fill your 2″ NDS screen with amazing graphics, challenging levels, and a story like no other.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow game has been ported to NDS (this version) and smartphones.
