The Punisher (Genesis) Game
The Punisher (AKA パニッシャー Hepburn: Panisshā in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling action beat ’em up video game developed and released by Capcom for the Sega Genesis console in 1993. This game is based on the Marvel’s character The Punisher and Nick Fury joins him to seek revenge.
The game has pretty good controls as they are well-responsive. By default, it uses only two buttons, but you can use a 3rd button to map your special move through the options menu.
The collision detection for the gameplay is great and it feels good enough when you hit your enemies. You begin the game with two lives. You have a chance to get a 1-up in a bonus game, which is a shooting gallery after stage 3. The 1-up is given when you hit all 20 targets, but you will only get points if you miss anything.
The graphics are also quite good. In general, the animation is properly done and the sprites have good details. Both The Punisher and Nicky Fury have fierce-looking faces. They also breathe heavily when idle to give you a sense of urgency. The game has an enjoyable variety of backgrounds, which keep it from being boring. However, the use of color is not that good.
Sometimes, the game has a muddy and dark feel to it, which makes it different than other vibrant games. When it tries to look colorful, it just becomes a bit garish. The color palette used in this game is the department that they can improve for Sega Genesis.
Although the music has a potential to be great, it falls into average to good. The instrumentations sound okay for the most part and the compositions are properly executed. However, the music fails in its percussion. The Punisher uses a weak-sounding drum sample. If a decent drum snare was used, the music would have sounded better. On the other hand, the sound effects are great. The pistol creates a gunshot effect that sound really authentic. The explosions, death cries, and glass breaking are done perfectly.
All in all, The Punisher for Genesis has almost everything of what makes the arcade such an enjoyable game. Even with some limitations, it still has the feel of the arcade game.
The Punisher game has been ported to Arcade (original), and Sega Genesis / Mega Drive (this version).
