Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi (AKA シャドー・ダンサー ザ・シークレット・オブ・シノビ in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling action video game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis console in 1990. In this game, you control a Shinobi aided by a dog that acts as your side-kick, and you must fight terrorist organizations to save your city.
The gameplay of Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi is similar to the original game. The player’s moves and the controls of both games are almost the same. The biggest difference is the incorporation of a canine side-kick that follows your character at all times. When your dog senses an enemy, you can order it to attack and hold the enemy down. But, if you take too long to attack or your companion has low health, your dog will be culled and then turn into a puppy. It remains in pup form until you finish the stage or acquire a time bomb.
In addition to your loyal friend and your sword, you have an unlimited supply of shurikens that you can launch to your foes anytime. Also, if you collect 50% of the time bombs in a level, you’re granted with a stronger weapon that will last until you clear the stage or die.
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi has four missions that are consist of three different stages. During each mission’s initial stages, you must gather a certain number of time bombs. You must also defeat the final bosses so that you can proceed to the next level. There are also mini-games in each mission. These bonus stages provide additional lives for your character if you’re able to complete it.
This is a great game for those who enjoy playing 2D, side-scrolling games. It is like Castlevania in terms of graphics and gameplay. Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi features an eerie atmosphere where you have to battle alien-looking monsters and demon-like ninjas. The main strength of this game is its difficulty and addictive elements. The story is well-written, so you will really pursue to defeat the boss before you even if you can die in one-hit.
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi has been ported to Arcade, Sega Genesis (this version), Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Virtual Console, Sony PlayStation 2, and PSP.
