Out Run (Genesis) Game
Out Run (AKA アウトラン Auto Ran in Japan) is a 1991 arcade pseudo 3D racing video game developed by Sega AM2 for some gaming systems like the Sega Genesis in which the player controls a Ferrari Testarossa Spider from a third-person rear perspective. It became one of the best-selling video games of its time!
OutRun is quite a simple racing game. However, unlike most traditional racing games, it allows you to compete against other clocks, instead of against other cars. It combined fresher ideas like skidding with the things that made previous racing games great. OutRun is one of the first games to use a steering wheel rather than a standard stick.
Through the race, the road will often split into two and you have to choose which way you want to take. This affects how challenging the game is, the areas you go through, and the reward sequence that plays in the end. You probably want to experience every route possible and play to beat your own best time, so this allows for a great deal of replay value.
Sega Genesis has limited hardware, so they did not achieve the same kind of scaling technology that the arcade has. The color palette looks a bit darker, but the movements of the cars and roadside objects are pretty good, even though they had to achieve it using a whole new technique of producing different sized sprites.
When it comes to the music, the renditions are quite authentic. This game uses an additional track titled “Step on Beat,” which is exclusive in this version.
The most important aspect is the gameplay and it does not disappoint. All of the 15 environments from the original arcade version are present in this game. The experience also feels so authentic. As mentioned above, the direction you choose when the road splits have an effect on the challenge of the game. Normally, the right route is more difficult than the left. You can change the overall difficulty when you go to the options menu.
As for the downside, some find Out Run for Genesis (or Mega Drive) lacking the arcade gameplay experience. Aside from doing every race, trying to beat your own best time, going through different routes, there is nothing much else to do.
Still, OutRun is a solid adaptation of the original arcade version. It is perfect for competing against friends as to who has the best time to complete the game.
Out Run game has been ported to Arcade (original), NEC PC-8801, Atari ST, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Commodore 64, Game Gear, Sega Genesis (this version), Master System, PC Engine, MS-DOS, Sega Saturn, and ZX Spectrum.
