Mega Bomberman (AKA Bomberman ’94 or ボンバーマン’94 Bonbāman Nintī Fō in Japan) is a 2D classic arcade maze video game developed and published by Hudson Soft for the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) in 1994. Many people loved playing it, and some are still hooked to this 16-bit video game.
The residents of Bomber Planet had been protected by five spirits for thousands of years until evil Bagular’s robot armies invaded them. These villains destroyed the spirit pictures which are the source of the Guardians’ magical power. After that, Bomber Planet split into five pieces.
Then, Bomberman arrives to retrieve all of the spirit pictures and to restore Bomber Planet back to what it was. Mega Bomberman begins!
Mega Bomberman has six areas: Vexin’ Volcano, Crankin’ Castle, Asteroid Lair, Slammin’ Sea, Jammin’ Jungle, and Thrashin’s Tundra. Unlike other games of it’s kind, this video game only supports up to four players because the Genesis 16-bit console doesn’t have a port for a fifth controller.
Mega Bomberman supports both multiplayer and single-player modes. In multiplayer, players battle each other. In single-player, you, as the player, navigates several mazes while destroying your foes with bombs.
There are other characters in this game, not just Bomberman. White Bomberman is introduced in this version and there are additional children and female playable bombers. You can also choose from red, blue, and green skins for your chosen character.
This game is incorporated with simple sound effects, and they fit the game so well. One soundtrack from the game’s previous version was reused in the first level of Jammin’ Jungle. The music is perfect for puzzle games like Columns and Tetris. This is why it is compatible to Mega Bomberman itself since its a kind of a puzzle game too.
Mega Bomberman for the Genesis is one of the most addicting games ever made. It is simple but challenging. It has good story arcs coupled with an exciting gameplay. If you’re into classic games, and you crave for a challenge, then this game might be worth a try.
Mega Bomberman game has been ported to Sega Genesis (this version), PC-Engine, Nintendo Virtual Console, Smartphones, and Sony PlayStation Network.
