The gameplay of Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is incredible. It has simple controls: jump, run, and hit things. You will constantly assault enemies, but you can deal with them through quick, calculated responses. There are six levels to complete, with a boss that you have to defeat at the end of each level. You have a lance as a start, and then you can find a few other weapons in the other levels, such as an axe, dagger, and torch.

Arthur has limited agility as he cannot turn while ducking, runs quite slowly, and cannot change course while in midair. However, this will not really make you frustrated since the game only requires what Arthur can do. Once you get past an area in the game without dying, you will find it amazing that Arthur’s actions seem to be skillful and effortless. His abilities and the challenges he faces are perfectly matched. As a result, you will know pretty much most of the time what you have to do in order to survive and what mistake caused you to die.

Help Sir Arthur save the princess!

If you have ever played other games in this series, you will notice that the music is typical of Ghosts ‘n Goblins. Although it is nothing fancy, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts has a horror-like theme and the music totally depicts that.

The graphics are typical of early Genesis games, but they are quite appealing. The bosses are huge and the sprites are colorful and detailed. However, many levels have too much black in the background, thus making them feel flat.

Ghouls ‘n Ghosts for Genesis is a simple but challenging and fun platform game. There are a few things in the game that may annoy you (like losing weapons accidentally), but it holds up pretty well at present. Pick this game up if you are into old-school video games.

Ghouls ‘n Ghosts game has been ported to Arcade, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, CP System, Commodore 64, Sharp X68000, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, SuperGrafx, Sega Master System, Genesis (this version), Virtual Console, ZX Spectrum.
