Alisia Dragoon (Sega Genesis)

Alisia Dragoon (AKA アリシアドラグーン – Arishia Doragūn in Japan) is a retro 2D side-scrolling adventure platformer / RPG developed by Game Arts and published by Sega / Game Arts for the Genesis console in 1992. The player controls Alisia, a young woman who is on a quest to avenge her father and save the world. She can fire lightning from her hands and summon four faithful beasts to aid her. While its gameplay is limited, the overall experience and its aesthetic still make it a good game.

The plot of the game is quite simple. It is about a warrior named Alisia who, together with her four dragons, is going to save the world. A huge object called the Silver Star falls from the sky with a legion of evil monsters that you need to destroy. It has eight levels that you have to finish to stop the resurgence of an ancient evil.

As Alisia, you go through the levels by jumping, running, and blasting your enemies.

Alisia Dragoon has super tight controls. You can kill your enemies using a homing lighting attack. Your lighting attacks are unlimited, but you have a lighting meter that drains as you use your power, which makes your attacks less powerful. For this reason, you have to plan your attacks and know how much power you use. You can wait for the meter to be completely charged so you can launch a full-screen attack.

The music was the aspect Alisia Dragoon excelled in. Some of the tunes will blow you away. The music in the first level sounds like a combination of psychedelic progressive metal and high fantasy music. The sound effects are fine, and with its upbeat music, will encourage you to go on with the game.

When it comes to its graphics, Alisia Dragoon has a quite dark and bleak aesthetic, but all in all, it is still a remarkable action platform game. It has explosive special effects, detailed sprites, and the levels take place in a huge range of settings — caves, towns, outdoors, and swamps.

This game is a hidden gem and if you did not have a chance to play it when you were young, you can pick it up now.

Alisia Dragoon game has only been ported to the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive.
