Wario Land 4 (AKA Wario Land Advance: Yōki no Otakara or ワリオランドアドバンス ヨーキのお宝 in Japan) is a 2D platforming video game developed by Nintendo R&D1 for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) handheld console. The game was released in 2001 and is the fifth installment in the Wario Land series. One of the best GBA games ever!
The story of the game basically follows the same concept that its predecessors followed. It is honestly not that interesting but it nicely established the setup of the game—where Wario fearlessly enters the newly discovered pyramid to search for the treasure and to save Princess Shokora.
The graphics of Wario Land 4 went through a massive polishing and are much better than the graphics of Wario Land 3. The visuals are better and the environments featured in the game are unique. The game was able to utilize the visual capacity of GBA, showing as many colors and hues on screen as possible. The stages incorporated more realistic details including transparent water bodies and weather effects.
A dozen of full-length songs were included in Wario Land 4 but they are not the typical songs you hear in most GBA backgrounds. The songs come with vocals and they all sound surprisingly good. The sound effects are also spot-on. They perfectly correspond to the movements and scenes.
Furthermore, the game has a competitive gameplay. The main mode of the game is the Quest Mode but if you get tired of running around and collecting gem pieces, you can always switch to playing the mini-games offered by the game.
Probably the only issue about the gameplay that many Wario followers complain about, is Wario’s mortality in the game. The game included a health gauge for him which when depleted, the player would have to start the level over again.
Nevertheless, Wario Land 4 is one of the most exciting platform games in GBA. Its smart gameplay design and challenging puzzles can keep many players hooked. Though the game’s difficulty may vary per stage, it is still a great game for people of any age.
Wario Land 4 game has been ported to Game Boy Advance and Nintendo Virtual Console.
