Super Mario Land (Game Boy)
Super Mario Land (AKA スーパーマリオランド, Sūpā Mario Rando) is a 2D platform video game developed by Nintendo for the Game Boy handheld console in 1989. It is the first Mario platform game ever to be released for a handheld console. An arcade-type side-scrolling game just like the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES, this game brought the excitement of playing Super Mario on a portable device. This review will take a closer look at this legendary game and see if it stands the test of time.
Just like most Super Mario games, one thing that makes this one stand out is its robust gameplay. The game itself is fast-paced and involves a good amount of strategy. It was addictive then and is still addictive now. Another thing going for Super Mario Land for Game Boy is the fact that it doesn’t merely try to be a downscaled version of the NES Super Mario.
Even though the game can be completed within a few hours, it has features that make it stand out from other Mario games. For example, there are stages where you will ride a submarine and a battleship to take down enemies.
Of course, Super Mario Land has its own set of weaknesses. As mentioned earlier, the game is short. It is only composed of 12 stages, and an experienced gamer should be able to complete it in an hour or even less. The graphics is also remarkably small, which is essential to make it fit on the Game Boy. Of course, these flaws are mainly due to the limitations of the Game Boy itself, but this can be problematic for some gamers.
With all things considered, Super Mario Land is still an incredible game to play today. More than just a Mario game, it is a game that stands out from other Mario games. It is a must-have in your retro collection.
Super Mario Land has been ported to GB (this version), and Nintendo Virtual Console (3DS).
