Mega Man Zero (Game Boy Advance)
Mega Man Zero (AKA Rockman Zero or ロックマンゼロ Rokkuman Zero in Japan) is a 2D side-scrolling platform video game developed by Capcom for the Game Boy Advance handheld console. It is the first title of the GBA Mega Man Series. Some sequels are Mega Man Zero 2 and Mega Man Zero 3.
This installment has Zero, X’s partner since Mega Man X, playing the lead role. Zero has awoken a hundred years into the future to find that Reploids have become the dominant species on earth. His mission, to stop X from retiring, read killing, all the Reploids he can find.
Having X as the main protagonist and acting like the very maverick that the Maverick Hunter used to exterminate is a major twist in the franchise. Fans of the game will either like it for being a refreshing take on X as a fallen paragon or hate it for feeling a little bit token and manipulative. At this point, some fans might just complain that the makers of the Mega Man series have run out of ideas and jumped the proverbial shark.
Those who have played Zero on Mega Man X 4 for the PlayStation will be familiar with how he plays in this title. Zero jumps, dashes, slashes and shoots just like he used to, although in this installment, he no longer uses the Z Buster and instead opts for a handheld gun.
The bosses of the game are all based on the different gods of Egypt like Anubis. Fighting bosses in Mega Man Zero is still as challenging and exciting as they used to be in previous entries.
The odd part about the gameplay is how extra items and equipment are acquired. Previous games saw players upgrading their characters through field acquisition of items and equipment. This time around, Zero harvests Cyber Elves in order to upgrade himself and his gear. This system provides an RPG grind system that some fans might feel a little bit too grindy and misplaced in an action platformer such as Mega Man Zero.
All in all, Mega Man Zero is a solid entry in the Mega Man franchise that may feel a little bit awkward for some longtime fans, given the new elements thrown into the game and the features that they replaced.
Mega Man Zero has been ported to Game Boy Advance (this version), Nintendo DS, and Virtual Console (Wii U). Are you ready to play it online? Go to the top of the page and click “Start Game”!
