Golden Sun (Game Boy Advance)
Golden Sun (AKA 黄金の太陽 開かれし封印, Ougon no Taiyou Hirakareshi Fūin in Japan) is a 2D role-playing game (RPG) developed by Camelot Software Planning for the Game Boy Advance in 2001. The game was published by Nintendo and also is the first installment of the Golden Sun saga, followed by Golden Sun 2: The Lost Age.
This game is one of the more popular titles to have been released for the Game Boy Advance. It is one of the few RPGs that came out on the platform that received a decent sized and devoted fan base.
Any person who’s a fan of J-RPGs can say that one of the most crucial components is a really good story. RPGs will have a lot of content poured into the game. It takes a lot of hours to complete a single run through. That said, it is imperative for an RPG to have a compelling narrative to entice the player to keep progressing through the story.
Golden Sun does not have that good of a narrative to keep most players hooked. It is by no means bad, but the plot is interesting for just the first few hours of the game, after which the interest it inspires sort of just fizzles out.
Golden Sun really shines as an example of excellent gameplay. In fact, its core gameplay is probably the reason why it has drawn the kind of following that it has.
The game uses the traditional turn based system common in RPGs of its era. Players issued commands that the participants of the battle executed in an order based on their agility.
Graphics and visuals are excellent. Golden Sun dazzled the screen of the GBA with its bright colors and fluid graphics. What made this achievement even more amazing was the fact that the game was one of the first releases on the GBA. Golden Sun is such a well-crafted visual spectacle, considering the development time that was available to the developer.
All things said, Golden Sun is a game that serves as a brilliant example of how some RPGs can get away with having a so-so story, but still be considered a good game for simply having such an amazing core gameplay experience.
Golden Sun has been ported to Game Boy Advance (this version), and Virtual Console. Anyway, it can be played online in this page. Go to the top!
